Taco Today

Dec 31, 2016 07:12PM ● By John Ennis
With the end of 2016 we decided it was time to say good bye to “Taco Tuesday” and hello to “Taco Today.” Why limit ourselves to Tacos once a week when our area offers so many options for enjoying Tacos every day, including Today?

Our crack editorial staff agreed any “Talk-o 'bout Tacos” should start with the venue that makes Taco lovers smile every Tuesday, Cabo in Seabrook. Even with a slight price increase starting this month, Taco Tuesday at Cabo is arguably the best bang for one’s buck. Of note is the nine flavorful choices Cabo offers every Tuesday at $3 a taco for Mojo Pork, Caribbean Jerk, Chicken Fajita, Steak Fajita or Fried Chicken, Mexican-style Street Tacos. For $1 more, chose from the three seafood options: Mahi Mahi, Ahi Avocado and Gulf Shrimp. But the Taco action isn’t limited to Tuesdays as the remaining six days of the week guests to Cabo can choose one of 4 taco entrees to satisfy those hunger pangs. And technically, you don’t need to limit yourself to just one taco entree. We don’t judge.

More Taco options that get a SCENE endorsement:

Mainly Drinks (La Porte): The Fish Taco is Panko fried tilapia, marinated slaw and pepper jack cheese on blue corn tortillas with a roasted tomatillo salsa. Served with chef's roasted corn and cilantro rice and vegetable of the day.

Roger's Bar & Grill (League City): Chef Andre Cartier lists his signature Mango Pico Fish Tacos as one of the two most highly recommended dishes on the menu.

Lone Star Grill (Bacliff): Choose from Fish or Shrimp Tacos: Huge Portions of Tilapia or Shrimp, Marinated in Jalapeño, Cilantro & Cumin then Grilled to Perfection. Served w/Pickled Cabbage, Carrots, Red Onions, Fresh Salsa, House Made Verde Sauce & Lime in Corn Tortillas.

Skallywag Suds ‘N Grub (Kemah): The team at Skallywag has gained a reputation for cooking up awesome scratch-made pub grub to complement the draft beer selection including a rotating selection of tacos (yellowfin, pulled pork, pork belly and fried chicken among others). We recommend visiting on Wednesday for $2.50 mix and match tacos.

Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack (Kemah): The Swamp Tacos are offered with a choice of alligator, fish, shrimp, or chicken blackened, grilled, or fried with shredded cabbage, pico, cilantro, cheese, and Cajun ranch on corn tortillas. You can find them on the lunch menu for a great deal.

Stuttgarden Tavern (Texas City): Order Fish & Chips for two grilled cod tacos served with a pico de gallo & avocado sauce.

Habanero's Taco Co. (Seabrook): Escape away from the norm and step into a Yucatan-style restaurant. An experience like none other around, step in and choose a tortilla and have your taco(s) filled with any of the 13 options available.

We recently had an opportunity to sample the tasty shrimp tacos at Legends Sports Grill in League City.

Next on our list are two new venues (Fuzzy’s Taco Shop in League City and Torchy’s Tacos in Webster), both ironically in locations previously home to Berryhill Baja Grill which had some tasty tacos while open locally. Let us know via Facebook if you think we missed a local venue serving up some awesome tacos.
