What You Need To Know Right Now about the Month Of May!

May 03, 2015 11:32PM ● By Corinne Moore
May is a busy month with various unique happenings. Take for example, “May-the-forth be with you” on Star Wars Day (May 4). This issue is chock-full of information on where to get margaritas and fajitas to celebrate Cinco de Mayo (May 5.) Definitely show your appreciation for the mother figures in your life on Mother’s Day (May 10.) Every day should be National Waiter and Waitress Day (May 21) because they are on the frontlines of customer service and making your dining experiences memorable ones. Memorial Day (May 25) is a solemn reminder to recognize those in the military who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. Honoring the first American woman to fly in space is Sally Ride Day (May 26). And World No Tobacco Day (May 31) can be commemorated with the use of a tobacco-less e-cig.

May is also Mental Health Month. What better way to get into the right frame of mind than to catch some live music entertainment? It’s good for the mind, body, and spirit. Make sure you check out a show! Here is a sampling of who is performing where:

Noah’s Ark (4438 Boulevard, Bacliff) is hosting Dave Nevling in their Parrots Nest – a “mini-Margaritaville” – on Saturday, May 9. Nevling will be performing the blues “his own way.” The Parrots Nest (their upstairs Palapa bar for the 21-and-over crowd) boasts a stage, a dance floor, a large seating area, and a full-service bar.

Grab your grass skirt or favorite Hawaiian shirt for a Luau Party at T-Bone Tom’s (707 Hwy. 146, Kemah) Saturday May 16. The Dreamsicles will be performing from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Tom’s Backyard. From 6 to 11 p.m. this same night, offer your best wishes and farewell to T-Bone Tom’s long-time General Manager Anna Kennedy at her retirement party with The Navigators performing.

Dean Seltzer describes his music as "high energy, obnoxious, redneck rock 'n roll." Those at Jackie’s Brickhouse just say it’s a damn fun night. Make plans to attend his show on Thursday, May 21. The venue is known for hosting benefits and has two on the calendar this month. On Saturday, May 9 is the benefit for Carla’s Crusade, and on Saturday, May 30 is the Texas Equusearch fundraiser.

Cabo (2513 NASA Pkwy.) offers high-energy rock and multiple genre party bands such as Safira on Saturday, May 23 and Falskye on Saturday, May 30.

Scout Bar (18307 Egret Bay Boulevard, Houston) will be hosting national acts all through the month of May, June, and the beyond. O-Town is in our town on Wednesday, May 6 for a reunion tour and performing old favorites and their new single "Skydive," from their forthcoming album "Lines & Circles." Looking forward to June is Hinder! Get tickets now for the Tuesday, June 9 tour stop. The band is only performing two Texas shows. This show features Hinder’s new lead vocalist Marshall Dutton.
