Changes Resale: The Bay Area’s Finest Contemporary Consignment Boutique

Aug 01, 2014 03:19PM ● By Corinne Moore
The first thing you notice when you visit Changes Resale, located at 16916 Highway 3 (Park Plaza II building) in Webster, is the ever-changing and striking window display. Currently, the window display features an origami evening gown made of newspapers.

Owner Kim Sheffield and her team enjoy putting together the striking displays year-round. “I have an artistic background,” Sheffield said. “I sculpt Santa Clauses and have experience in all sorts of different media, so the windows are my new outlet for that.”

The customers definitely enjoy them, but the window displays are only the draw. The real treasure is what is found inside.

Since opening in 2001, Changes Resale has become a destination resale shop. “I have customers who routinely come from Sugarland, The Woodlands, Kingwood and the like,” said Sheffield. “We even have a few diehards that moved to other states and still come see us every time they're in town. And one lady from Louisiana tells us she comes to visit us before her own mother!”

Sheffield laughs, but is serious when she says she owes the store’s success to her customers’ loyalty and Changes’ commitment to their shopping experience. “That means everything! We want our ladies to leave happier than when they arrived. Some of it is basic; we make sure the store looks pretty and is organized and easy to shop, but the most important thing to us is that our customers feel pampered and attended, and want them to have fun. It must work because sometimes ladies come and stay all day!”

She credits her staff with Changes’ popularity as well. “I'm just blessed with a great staff! It’s not only that they know how to pull together great outfits in minutes, or know which cuts or color will look particularly beautiful on someone. It’s that they are all really warm and talented women who enjoy what they do and genuinely love this shop. And I think that translates beautifully into the service they provide.”

Changes Resale carries casual to formal designer and better-brand ladies’ clothing, (sizes 0-22), fine and costume jewelry, handbags, accessories and small home décor.

Sheffield explains, “We ‘curate’ our selection of inventory. Our consignors know to only bring the best of their best because we are extremely selective on behalf of our customers. The fun part of resale is never knowing what you might find, and we get just as excited as our customers to see what comes in. We have a number of consignors who own boutique shops of their own or work for popular department stores, so we get new-with-tag clothing all the time.”

Stop in and shop often at Changes Resale as the inventory changes quickly. “We get great designer purses, and they tend to come in and go out pretty quickly. Our last Louis Vuitton sold right out of the backroom before I even had a chance to put the price tag on it. And right now we have a large selection of James Avery and Brighton pieces,” Sheffield says. “We always have amazing jewelry.”

Sheffield is a member of NARTS: The National Association of Resale Professionals. “It’s a vigorous association which provides amazing ongoing support and education in all areas of resale. In previous years, I've attended courses on authentication of designer goods, fashion trends, customer service and pricing to name just a few. The training is provided by many of our industries leaders. Some of my favorite seminars were presented by Sue McCarthy, owner of Women’s Closet Exchange and star of the Style Network’s reality show Resale Royalty. I'm looking forward to attending a NARTS conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, this fall and can’t wait to come back full of new ideas!”
